Gunfire on Lake Huron?

Ths Saginaw News carries this article regarding the planned use of parts of Lake Huron for live gunfire training:

If you hear machine guns on the Saginaw Bay sometime soon, it's likely from the U.S. Coast Guard.

The agency, part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, is proposing to create 26 "safety zones" throughout the Great Lakes -- including six on Lake Huron -- for live gunfire training.

The closest two to the Bay are east of Tawas City and north of Port Hope in the Thumb.

The Coast Guard would use the zones, at least five miles off shore, for periodic training involving real machine guns and real bullets, officials say.

Coast Guard officials said they would notify boaters of training exercises through transmissions on marine band radio, as well as through marinas and harbor masters.

The U.S. Coast Guard Station Saginaw River has four boats capable of carrying .308-caliber machine guns, said Michael J. Pollack, senior chief at the station.
